It's tough, functional, good looking, and it's available for under $200.00 at the time of this post. For those kinds of reasons, Casio watches have earned their place among the best values in timekeeping, and this Casio chronograph watch shows why.

Casio's G-Shock family of watches are widely respected as the world's toughest watches. They are built with several layers of construction that work to isolate and absorb the effect of intense shocks, protecting the inner watch core. Encased in ion-plated stainless steel, the Casio G-Shock Atomic Solar Chronograph Watch GS1100-2A inherits that family trait of legendary toughness. It's a real beater, made to withstand the rigors of extreme activities, with far more shock-resistance than needed for everyday wear.

Along with its toughness, the Casio G-Shock Atomic Solar Chronograph Watch GS1100-2A is loaded with functionality. First, it provides full chronograph functions, including split-time, with 1/20 second resolution and 60 minute elapsed time capacity, great for any sports and activities requiring the measurement of elapsed time. Second, this timepiece is accurate right up to the second due to its multi-band atomic calibration. Even without calibration, the Casio GS1100-2A maintains accuracy within +/-20 seconds per month, due to its precision quartz movement. Third, if you travel, you'll appreciate the world time function that delivers the time in 29 time zones (27 cities). Fourth, you will never need to change a battery, because the Casio G-Shock Atomic Solar Chronograph Watch GS1100-2A is solar powered, drawing energy from light, even ordinary indoor lighting, and it will keep running for five months on full charge without further exposure to light. Fifth, this versatile watch is ready for your next dive expedition, with water-resistance rating of 200 meters. Finally, time can be read in 12 or 24 hour format, the auto-calendar is pre-programmed until the year 2099, it offers 4 daily alarms with snooze function, and more. Obviously, the Casio GS1100-2A provides a lot of functionality.

Specifications

• Size:

49.8mm x 15.2mm

• Case:

Black ion plated stainless steel, silver tone accents

• Bezel:

Black ion plated stainless steel, stationary

• Dial:

Blue, 3 black subdials, date aperture between 4 and 5 o'clock positions

• Crystal:

Scratch-resistant, tempered mineral

• Movement:

Precision quartz analog movement, 12 or 24 hour formats, world time in 29 time zones and 27 cities, auto-calendar (pre-programmed until the year 2099), 4 daily alarms with snooze, hourly time signal, shock-resistant

• Chronograph:

1/20 second stopwatch, 60 seconds, 60 minutes, elapsed time, split time, countdown timer

• Accuracy:

Atomic timekeeping, multi-band 5 frequencies [WWVB (USA) 60 kHz, JJY40 (Japan) 40 kHz, JJY60 (Japan) 60 kHz, MSF (UK) 60 kHz, DCF77 (Germany) 77.5kHz], receives time calibration radio signals which keep the displayed time accurate, auto-receive function (4 times per day), manual receive function Signal WWVB frequency 60kHz, +/- 20 seconds per month with no radio signal calibration

• Power:

Solar/light powered, no batteries to change, power level indicator, charge life from full charge of 11 months without further exposure to light, once charged average room lighting will maintain the charge, storage battery CTL11025

• Illumination:

Neo-brite luminous hands and hour markers

• Submersible:

20 atm/200 meters/660 feet

• Band:

Black resin strap, tang clasp

It's hard to resist the classy, sports appeal of the Casio G-Shock Atomic Solar Watch GS1100-2A,designed with a dark blue dial that supports three black subdials and silver-tone markers and accents, all set in a black case that attaches to the wrist with a comfortable, black rubber strap. Designed with classical Swiss Army watch style, it looks great with any attire and for nearly any occasion except for the most formal. With its tachymeter scale on the bezel and full chronograph functions, the Victorinox Swiss Army Chronograph Watch 241120 makes a fine choice as an aviator's watch or racing watch, good for any application where measuring elapsed time and calculating units per hour (such as miles or kilometers per hour) are required.

With precision Swiss analog quartz movement, the Victorinox Swiss Army Chronograph Watch 241120 is a superb timekeeper that delivers ultra high accuracy and reliability. The subdials register 1/10 second resolution at 2 o'clock, 60 seconds (continuous regular time) at 6 o'clock, and 30 minutes at 10 o'clock, while chrono seconds are indicated by the central sweep seconds hand. The chronograph offers stopwatch, countdown timer, and split-seconds functions. Many will also find the date function with display aperture at 4 o'clock very useful.

As expected from Swiss Army watches, the Victorinox Swiss Army Chronograph Watch 241120 is built to withstand the rigors of extreme activity. With 316L surgical grade stainless steel case and bracelet, and anti-reflective, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, this chronograph watch provides heavy-duty durability and excellent corrosion resistance, made to last and last. While the 100 meter submersible rating does not qualify the Victorinox Swiss Army Chronograph Watch 241120 for serious diving, the screwdown caseback and crown with O-ring seal ensures water-resistance for swimming and light snorkeling.

Specifications

• Size:

40mm diameter

• Case:

316L surgical grade stainless steel, screwdown caseback

• Bezel:

Aluminum, blue, tachymeter scale

• Crown:

Protected srewdown crown with O-ring seal, chrono pushers

• Dial:

Blue, 3 tonal subdials, silver Arabic numerals, date aperture at 4 o'clock position

• Crystal:

Anti-reflective, scratch-resistant sapphire

• Movement:

Precision Swiss quartz analog movement, calendar date

• Chronograph:

1/10 second, 60 seconds, 30 minutes, split-seconds function, stopwatch, countdown timer

• Illumination:

Luminous hands and hour markers

• Submersible:

10 atm/100 meters/330 feet

• Band:

316L stainless steel bracelet, push button deployment clasp with safety, length men's

Designed and crafted with characteristic Victorinox aplomb, the Victorinox Swiss Army Chronograph Watch 241120 delivers superb, long-lasting performance while looking good doing it. With bold styling and tank-like durability, this high end sports watch is ready to go wherever you go. Functionally, the Tag Heuer Formula One F1 Watch WAH1110.BA0850 is designed as an accurate, reliable dive watch, submersible to 200 meters. Yet, it's a beautiful watch for any occasion, built to take the punishment of everyday wear.

Its dive watch features include, unidirectional rotating bezel with 60-minute scale for providing critical interval timing data, large luminous hands and hour markers that stand against a black dial for easy readouts even in low light and no light conditions, water-resistance up to 200 meters, and a stainless steel bracelet with a fold-over, double-locking deployment clasp with safety and diving extension system for fitting over dive suits. Without question the Tag Heuer Formula One F1 Watch WAH1110.BA0850 is well-equipped for going down deep and delivering top-notch performance. Still, it's a safe bet that most people who buy this watch, do not do so for diving.

A friend of mine bought one of these watches for himself a couple of months ago, and he wears it everyday. When I commented on its great dive features, he had no idea what I was talking about. He bought the Tag Heuer Formula One F1 Watch WAH1110.BA0850 because it looks great, plain and simple. Of course, he knew that with a "Tag," he was getting a fine Swiss watch, and he's glad that he can wear it at the beach or in the pool without worrying about water getting inside, but diving was never his concern. Still, whether we dive or not, it's good to know that the watch we're wearing is a fine instrument with high functionality, even if we never use those functions.

Specifications

• Size:

41mm x 11.5mm

• Case:

Finely brushed stainless steel, screwdown caseback

• Bezel:

Scratch-resistant titanium carbide plated stainless steel, unidirectional rotating bezel, 60-minute scale, raised fine-brushed numerals

• Crown:

Protected, screwdown crown, scratch-resistant titanium carbide plated

• Dial:

Black, 3 hand display, date aperture at 3 o'clock

• Crystal:

Anti-reflective, scratch-resistant sapphire

• Movement:

Precision Tag Heuer Swiss quartz analog, calendar date

• Illumination:

Large luminous hands and hour markers

• Submersible:

20 atm/200 meters/660 feet

• Band:

Brushed stainless steel bracelet, fold-over double-locking deployment clasp with safety, and dive extension system

The Tag Heuer Formula One F1 Watch WAH1110.BA0850 offers plenty of sophisticated sports appeal along with Tag's legendary technological excellence. Interestingly, most of us who are drawn to this bestselling watch rarely, if ever dive. We like the way it looks and the way it feels on the wrist. We appreciate the classic dive watch design that arises from its function-first orientation, and the high utility of its features, even if we don't use them fully, and we simply enjoy wearing it. Still, if you dive, you can appreciate the Seiko Automatic Dive Watch SNM035 all the more.

The primary dive features include the unidirectional rotating bezel with 60-minute scale and luminous marker at the 12 o'clock position for delivering critical dive timing data, the large luminous hands and hour markers that provide clear legibility in low light and murky conditions, the 200 meter water-resistance rating conferred by the twin screwdown crowns and the screwdown caseback, and the bracelet equipped with a fold-over pushbutton deployment clasp with safety latch and dive extension for fitting properly over a wet suit. Other features of the Seiko Automatic Dive Watch SNM035 may not be quite as obvious to the eye but, nevertheless, are great for a dive watch, or any watch for that matter.

Designed for repeated exposure to salt water and the rigors of underwater expeditions, the case and bracelet are made from 316L surgical grade stainless steel for high durability and corrosion resistance, for optimum longevity. Still, it's what's inside the case that really counts, the hidden mechanism within. When operating in the unforgiving underwater environment timing is critical, and precise, reliable time measurement can mean the difference between life and death. Here, the Seiko Automatic Dive Watch SNM035 really delivers with its caliber 7s35 automatic, self-winding movement, with 21 jewel bearings, and 42 hour power reserve. The automatic movement powers up as you wear it, winding whenever you move, so you never need to worry about it running down, or a battery giving out just when you most need the time, a great feature for a dive watch.

Specifications

• Size:

45mm x 15mm

• Case:

316L surgical grade stainless steel, screwdown caseback

• Bezel:

316L stainless steel, unidirectional rotating, 60-minute scale, luminous marker at 12 o'clock position

• Crown:

Protected screwdown crown at 2 o'clock, and screwdown compass controller at 4 o'clock

• Dial:

Black, date aperture at 4 o'clock, inner 360 degree rotating compass dial ring

• Crystal:

Domed, scratch-resistant hardlex

• Movement:

Precision Seiko mechanical, automatic/self-winding, caliber 7s35, 21 jewels, calendar date

• Illumination:

Large luminous hands and hour markers and bezel dot

• Submersible:

20 atm/200 meters/660 feet

• Band:

316L surgical grade stainless steel, fold-over push-button safety clasp, width 19.5mm, length men's, dive extension

One of the more obvious features of the Seiko Automatic Dive Watch SNM035 is its size. Dubbed the "Monster," its 45mm x 15mm case is quite a wrist full that makes a strong impression, while fulfilling its function of providing easy readouts at a glance. When it's on your wrist, you know that you are wearing a highly refined, heavy duty instrument that offers Seiko precision and reliability, so it's a pleasure to wear whether you dive or not.

MSRP: $495.00

Where to buy:
Seiko Automatic Dive Watch SNM035
Sale Price: $185.00 (Save 63% + free shipping)

Chase-Durer Trackmaster Pro Chronograph Watch 224.2BO-LEA

The Chase-Durer Trackmaster Pro Chronograph Watch 224.2BO-LEA is an extremely versatile sports watch, the result of many hours of research and consultations with specialists in many fields, both military and civilian. Divers will appreciate its unidirectional rotating bezel with 60-minute scale for tracking critical dive times, its large luminous hands and hour markers (SuperLuminova) for clear legibility in low light or no light conditions, and its 200 meter water-resistance rating conferred by its screwdown caseback, crown and chrono pushers.

For aviators and race enthusiasts (of all persuasions, motor-assisted or not), the Chase-Durer Trackmaster Pro Chronograph Watch 224.2BO-LEA offers 1/10 second resolution, and registers partial times (as many as you need) and accumulated time for up to 12 hours of elapsed time. Equipped also with a tachymeter scale on the bezel, average speed (miles or kilometers per hour) can be determined readily over a known distance. Of course, the tachymeter can be used for any kind of units--for example, to determine rate of production, such as the number of widgets produced each hour in the factory.

Built with 316L surgical grade stainless steel with black ion-plated accents, for durability and corrosion resistance, the case of the Chase-Durer Trackmaster Pro Chronograph Watch 224.2BO-LEA houses a precision multifunction movement (ETA 251.262) that delivers the outstanding quartz accuracy and reliability expected from a Swiss Made watch.

Specifications

• Size:

44mm x 12mm

• Case:

316L surgical grade brushed stainless steel and black ion-plated steel, screwdown caseback

• Bezel:

316L stainless steel, black ion-plated, unidirectional rotating with 60-minute scale, tachymeter scale

• Crown:

Screwdown crown and chrono pushers

• Dial:

Black, textured carbon fiber, 3 tonal subdials, orange trim, date aperture at 4 o'clock

• Crystal:

Anti-reflective, scratch-resistant sapphire

• Movement:

Precision Swiss quartz analog, ETA 251.262, 27 jewels, calendar date

• Chronograph:

1/10 second resolution, 60 seconds, 60 minutes, 12 hours, partial times, accumulated elapsed time, stopwatch, countdown timer

• Illumination:

Large luminous hands and hour markers

• Submersible:

20 atm/200 meters/660 feet

• Band:

Black leather strap with orange contrast stitching, deployment clasp with double-lock security, width 27mm, length men's

• Additional:

Serial numbered

Chase-Durer's mission is to offer top quality Swiss watches at realistic prices, and the Chase-Durer Trackmaster Pro Chronograph Watch 224.2BO-LEA backs up their mission statement. It charges in natural sunlight or indoor light, and maintains a 180 day power reserve with no exposure to light. A low charge indicator gives advance notice of power depletion, so the Citizen Professional Diver Ladies Watch EP6010-03E will not quit working when you least expect it, nor just when you need it the most several fathoms under.

Specifications

• Size:

32mm x 12.5mm

• Case:

Brushed stainless steel, screwdown caseback

• Bezel:

Black stainless steel, unidirectional rotating, 60-minute scale, luminous marker at the 12 o'clock position

• Crown:

Fluted, screwdown crown

• Dial:

Black with wave pattern, yellow accents, date aperture at 3 o'clock

• Crystal:

Scratch-resistant, tempered mineral crystal

• Movement:

Precision Eco-Drive Japanese quartz analog, calendar date

• Power:

Solar power, charges in natural sunlight or indoor light, 180 day power reserve with no exposure to light, low charge indicator

• Illumination:

Luminous hands and hour markers and bezel dot

• Submersible:

30 atm/300 meters/990 feet

• Band:

Black rubber dive strap, traditional tang clasp, width 17mm, length women's

While there is nothing particularly feminine about the Citizen Professional Diver Ladies Watch EP6010-03E, this timepiece is a professional instrument that transcends notions of feminine or masculine fashion, making its own fashion statement as a highly refined tool that looks good no matter who is wearing it or where. With full chronograph functions and tachymeter scale it's ideal for racing or aviation or any application where measuring elapsed time, factoring in distance, and calculating average speed are essential.

The utility of the Wenger Commando SR Watch 70873 is magnified by the E6B aviator's slide rule which can be used for a wide array of calculations and conversions, including but not limited to:
. Pre-flight and in-flight calculations such as ground speed, air speed, distance, wind set, fuel consumption, etc.;
. Conversions of statute miles to nautical miles or to kilometers, mph to kph, imperial measurements to metric, and currency conversions;
. And it performs arithmetic functions for the equation or formula of one's choosing.

Of course, the usefulness of the Wenger Commando SR Watch 70873 is not limited to racing enthusiasts or pilots and flight crews, but its multifunctions can be applied to many indoor and outdoor activities requiring precision timing and factoring (running, cycling and rowing come readily to mind). The precision Swiss quartz analog movement with 13 jewels is accurate to 1/10 second per day, and features a 12 hour, triple gauge chronograph with continuous sweep second hand. Built with solid surgical grade stainless steel for durability and reliability in extreme conditions, the Wenger Commando SR Watch 70873 is sealed with screwdown caseback and crown for water-resistance rating of 100 meters--not enough for scuba diving, but sufficient for swimming and snorkeling.

Specifications

• Size:

42mm x 13mm

• Case:

316L brushed stainless steel, screwdown caseback

• Bezel:

316L brushed stainless steel, stationary, EB6 aviator's slide rule (rotating/locking inner bezel operated by the left crown at 10 o'clock)

• Crown:

Fluted, screwdown crown, left crown operates the slide rule, chrono pushers

• Dial:

Black, 3 silver subdials (small seconds at 2 o'clock, 12 hours at 6 o'clock, 30 minutes at 9 o'clock), tachymeter scale on the flange, date aperture at 4 o'clock

• Crystal:

Scratch-resistant, tempered mineral crystal

• Movement:

Precision Swiss quartz analog (accurate to 1/10 second per day), calendar date, 13 jewels

• Chronograph:

60 seconds, 30 minutes, 12 hours, stopwatch, countdown timer

• Illumination:

Luminous hands and hour markers

• Submersible:

10 atm/100 meters/330 feet

• Band:

Black leather strap, padded, white contrast stitching, tang clasp, width 20mm, length men's, lug width 21mm

While perfect for wearing with a leather flight jacket, the Wenger Commando SR Watch 70873 demonstrates the clean order of Wenger design principles, making it suitable for most settings, where it's certain to draw admiring attention. Large enough for easy readouts (43mm) but not bulky, the Origo Rendezvous Peak Multifunction Watch WT-019-C04 packs all of those features into a sleek, very durable package that wears comfortably in a very convenient location--the wrist--leaving hands free for other things.

While keeping precise time in two time zones, day, date, and two alarms, the Origo Rendezvous Peak Multifunction Watch WT-019-C04 offers full chronograph functions with 1/100 second resolution, lap time, split time, 99 lap memories stored in a maximum 99 runs, great for timing laps around the track, fitness hikes, trail runs, or timing the cooking at the camp site, among other possible applications.

In the great outdoors, the Origo Rendezvous Peak Multifunction Watch WT-019-C04 brings a wealth of useful data to your fingertips, especially for weather forecasting and navigation. The barometer function, with 30-hour trend memory, provides the current weather conditions, and gives a heads up for changing conditions, as when a cold front is moving in. For the temperature function to provide accurate ambient temperature readings, the Origo Rendezvous Peak Multifunction Watch WT-019-C04 (as with other watches of its kind) must be removed for 15 minutes to prevent skewing by body heat.

The compass and altimeter functions of the Origo Rendezvous Peak Multifunction Watch WT-019-C04 unite bearing and elevation data to keep you from getting lost in the mountains. The digital compass (kept level and adjusted for declination) compares favorably with a larger magnetic compass, sufficiently accurate for orienteering, and it allows you to lock in a bearing to follow and adjust it on the fly.

The altimeter of the Origo Rendezvous Peak Multifunction Watch WT-019-C04 provides elevation data, on the spot and 75 altimeter data memories with date, time, and altitude, and graphic display of the past 8 hours trend. This data can be useful not only for navigation but, also, for taking elevation into account when training for trail runs or fitness hiking. As with other watches of its kind, the altimeter and barometer functions of the Origo Rendezvous Peak Multifunction Watch WT-019-C04 both depend on the same atmospheric pressure sensor, so to maintain accurate readings frequent recalibration is needed (daily or more frequently depending on conditions). That being said, the altimeter is sufficiently accurate for satisfying navigation and information purposes.

Specifications

• Size:

43mm x 15mm

• Case:

Durable composite

• Bezel:

Stainless steel, stationary

• Dial:

Grey, LCD digital display

• Crystal:

Scratch-resistant, tempered mineral

• Movement:

Precision quartz digital, time/day/date, 2 time zones, 2 alarms

• Chronograph:

Digital chronograph functions with 1/100 second resolution, lap time, split time, 99 lap memories stored in a maximum of 99 runs, stopwatch, countdown timer

• Compass:

Electronic digital compass, declination adjustable (magnetic/true north), bearing tracking, bearing lock

• Altimeter:

Displays current altitude with 1 meter/3 feet resolution, graph with past 8 hours trend, 75 altimeter data memories with date, time and altitude.

• Barometer:

Range 300-1100 mbar, displays current conditions and 30 hour trend for weather forecasting, graphic display

• Thermometer:

Celsius/Fahrenheit, remove watch for at least 15 minutes for accurate reading

• Illumination:

Soft blue electroluminescent backlight

• Submersible:

5 atm/50 meters/165 feet

• Band:

Flexible, comfortable rubber strap

• Mass:

70g/2.5oz

The Origo Rendezvous Peak Multifunction Watch WT-019-C04 is built tough and durable, while being relatively small, light-weight and comfortable to wear. This timepiece can take a real beating while delivering accurate time and its terra sensor functions.

Specifications

• Size:

47mm x 16mm

• Case:

316L marine grade stainless steel, screwdown caseback

• Bezel:

316L marine grade stainless steel rotating compass bezel, tritium illuminated dot at the North position

• Crown:

Screwdown crown

• Dial:

Black, analog/digital display

• Crystal:

Scratch-resistant tempered mineral

• Movement:

Precision Swiss quartz analog digital, 12/24 hour time, time for 24 cities (time zones), day/date/month, multiple alarms, hourly chime

• Chronograph:

1/100 second resolution stopwatch, countdown timer, lap timer, 20 lap memory

• Compass:

Digital compass

• Terra sensors:

Altimeter, barometer, thermometer (C or F)

• Illumination:

Swiss self-powered tritium illumination, clearly readable in low-light or no-light, 100x brighter than other forms of watch illumination, glows continuously for up to 25 years, no need for charging or pushing a button to activate and no battery drain, auto-activating electroluminescent backlight with wrist tilt

• Submersible:

10 atm/100 meters/330 feet

• Band:

Black leather strap with stainless steel deployment clasp with safety

Additional features of the Stryker Terra Sensor Watch WTD0002 include analog and digital displays with 12 or 24 hour time option, world time for 24 time zones, and calendar with day of week, date, and month displays, multiple alarms, hourly chime and a genuine leather strap with stainless steel security deployment clasp. The design of this watch celebrates the rich heritage of American aviation in several details, including the black main dial and the cockpit style totalizers, projecting a control panel look. The tapered scale on the seconds subdial at 3 o'clock adds a nice touch of dynamism, along with the white tachymeter scale on the black bezel. Even the black rubber strap, with its grooved surface, suggests an aircraft's tires, and that theme is reinforced by the 'VR Rotation Speed' inscribed on the flange, calling to mind the speed at which the nosewheel leaves the ground. Even the name of the Hamilton Khaki Tachymiler Watch H71726333 honors American aviation by insisting that the tachymeter scale on the bezel is actually the 'tachymiler,' although any distance units can be applied, of course.

This sporty chronograph has color-coded pushers on the left side of the case in black and red to facilitate use on the fly. In fact, as aviation watches go, the Hamilton Khaki Tachymiler Watch H71726333, uncluttered by an E6B slide rule, is clearly readable at a glance for the functions needed most while in the air. For example, this chronograph is capable of recording intermediate time, which can be vital for sport and racing pilots, and the countdown function can be valuable for timing a landing slot, optimizing the holding time. All in all, the Hamilton Khaki Tachymiler Watch H71726333 makes a fine co-pilot, strapped conveniently to the wrist.

Specifications

• Size:

44mm x 16mm, a men's watch

• Case:

Brushed stainless steel, screw-down sapphire crystal display caseback

• Bezel:

Black matte stainless steel, rotating, tachymeter (tachymiler)

• Crown:

Left hand screw-down crown and color-coded chrono pushers

• Dial:

Black matte, silver tone subdials, day/date display at 9 o'clock

• Crystal:

Scratch-resistant sapphire

• Movement:

Swiss automatic, Calibre Valjoux 7750, 25 jewels, 42 hour power reserve, calendar date

• Chronograph:

Stopwatch, countdown timer, 60 seconds, 30 minutes

• Illumination:

Luminous hands

• Submersible:

10 atm/100 meters/330 feet

• Band:

Black rubber strap, tang clasp, width 22mm, length 9.5 inches

• Mass:

4.80 oz

The Hamilton Khaki Tachymiler Watch H71726333 offers precision functionality and stunning design that not only looks great but, also, conveys the deep heritage of American aviation. As the name implies, the Seamaster Planet Ocean watch is built for the sea, well up to the challenge of the ocean's harsh and unforgiving environment, great for diving of course, but also for any water related activities where precision, reliability and durability are required.

In addition to its great functionality and performance, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Watch 2909.50.91 has exceptional style, with its polished stainless steel case and black dial which is accented by orange numerals and framed by orange bezel with a lightly fluted edge. Large luminous hands and markers, including the 12 o'clock bezel dot, provide excellent readability in low light. A black rubber dive strap finishes off the look of this superb dive watch.

While the exterior appearance of the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Watch 2909.50.91 is stunningly beautiful, it's what's inside that really counts. The self-winding, mechanical movement, with power reserve of 44 hours, means no batteries to worry about, and this movement (Omega 2500 caliber) is enhanced by the co-axial escapement that was developed by Omega in conjunction with watchmaker George Daniels. By drastically reducing friction among the moving parts, the co-axial escapement delivers improved stability and precision, while reducing service requirements. In short, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Watch can be counted on for accurate timekeeping, even under rigorous conditions, and it's built to last.

Specifications

• that I reviewed August 28, 2009, this Timex IronMan Road Trainer Heart Rate Monitor T5K212, is really a mini-computer that provides all the essential heart rate data needed for any level of training for running, cycling, rowing, walking, swimming, etc. (Note: heart rate readings are not accurate while actually underwater). And, the Timex T5K212 is great for cardiac rehab workouts and weight loss programs as well.

Again, much like the Polar 300SX which can be coupled with optional Polar equipment for serious athletes, the Timex T5K212 can be combined with the Timex Data Recorder T5G751 (approx. $50) to upload the time and heart rate data that the watch collects into your PC via USB cable for use with the Timex training software which provides various analyses, graphs and summaries of your workout data. For really serious athletes (or if you just really like gadgets) you can also dovetail data from the Timex GPS 3D Sensor T5F891 (approx. $120) for adding in altitude, latitude, longitude, ascent/descent details to your reports. As for myself, all of that optional data might be fun, but all I really want or need is the basic heart rate monitoring that the basic watch (Timex IronMan Road Trainer Heart Rate Monitor T5K212) provides for a very sensible price.

The purpose of the Timex IronMan Road Trainer Heart Rate Monitor T5K212, like other heart rate monitors, is to improve your fitness by helping you train at your own optimum intensity. You can choose your own training zone for safe, effective workouts that will maximize good results from your efforts. In addition to monitoring your heart rate for staying within your training zone, you will receive data concerning energy and calorie expenditure during training.

Specifications

• Basic HRM
 features:

The heart rate sensor attaches to your chest by means of a comfortable strap, and measures the electrical signals generated by your heart as it beats. It then calculates heart rate and transmits that data to the watch. Digital transmission protects your data from cross-talk with other heart rate monitors and interference from electronic exercise equipment. Simply glance at your watch for the heart rate display. Heart rate can be displayed as % of maximum heart rate or bpm, target zone display, with an alarm for staying in target zone.

• Exercise
 features:

Five HR-based target zones with alarm for staying in zone, Average and maximum heart rate for each lap up to 99 laps, average and maximum heart rate of total exercise, lap and split time and lap number displays, recovery heart rate timer measures heart rate after a timed recovery during or after your workout.

• Recording
 features:

Data stored for each lap includes lap and split time, average heart rate, maximum heart rate, time in target zone, average heart rate in zone, lap data, calorie expenditure, aggregate performance data over multiple workouts, overall average heart rate, aggregate exercise time.

• Watch
 features:

Time of day (12h/24h format), dual time zone, calendar day/date/month, alarm with 5 minute snooze can be set for either of two time zones, water resistant to 100 meters, Indiglio backlight illumination with night-mode option, 3.5 year battery life, low battery indicator, hourly beeper option.

• Chronograph
 features:

Stopwatch with 1/100 second resolution, multi-mode countdown timer with auto stopwatch start at end of countdown option, 50 lap memory, 99 lap counter, lap time/split time displays.

When I reviewed the Polar RS300X heart rate monitor, I stated that it would probably be the next HRM watch I buy. Now that I've reviewed the Timex IronMan Road Trainer Heart Rate Monitor T5K212, I can no longer say probably to either one. Both HRM watches offer great functionality, and each in its own way has great styling. I still want to review a couple more HRM watches before making up my mind, but the Timex IronMan Road Trainer Heart Rate Monitor T5K212, which is a bit less costly, is looking like a great choice. I'll keep you posted. Its standout function is the E6B flight computer etched into the slide rule bezel. Used in conjunction with the chronograph, the E6B provides a pilot an extremely versatile tool right on his or her wrist. Still, the styling of this watch is a standout feature in itself. The gold-tone stainless steel case and bracelet are accented strikingly by the black ionic plated stainless steel bezel, crown, pushers, and lug screws, and the genuine black carbon fiber dial. As Pulsar likes to claim, justifiably so with Seiko's force behind them, style and substance come together very nicely in the Pulsar Flight Computer Pilot Watch PF3782.

While the E6B flight computer is no longer a pilot's first source of data, it remains an important backup tool for flight planning on the ground before takeoff, as well as in the air. For pre-flight planning the E6B can be used to calculate such things as fuel burn, wind correction, time en route, etc., and in the air it can be used to determine ground speed, how much wind is affecting course and speed, and to solve simple arithmetic problems and more complex mathematical equations of various kinds. In short, the aviation slide rule bezel on the Pulsar Flight Computer Pilot Watch PF 3782 delivers all the data a pilot needs to get from point A to Point B safely and on time.

Specifications

• Size:

46mm x 14mm, a men's watch

• Case:

Solid gold-tone stainless steel, screw-down caseback

• Bezel:

Black ionic plated stainless steel, bi-directional aviation slide rule, E6B flight computer

• Crown:

Ultra crown protector

• Dial:

Genuine black carbon fiber, date aperture at 3 o'clock position

• Crystal:

Hardlex scratch-resistant mineral crystal, with date magnifier

• Movement:

Japanese analog quartz chronograph movement, calendar date

• Chronograph:

Stopwatch, 1/5 second resolution, 60 seconds, 60 minutes, split time measurement, analog alarm subdial

• Illumination:

Luminescent hands and hour markers

• Submersible:

10 atm/100 meters/330 feet

• Band:

Gold-tone stainless steel bracelet, double locking push button release deployment safety clasp, 23.5mm width

• Battery:

Three year battery life

The Pulsar Flight Computer Pilot Watch PF3782 is featured packed, including an alarm subdial at 6 o'clock, providing an easy to use alarm, and it can be used to display a second time zone that can be read at a glance. A tachymeter can be used to measure speed or distance, or any event that can be quantified as units in relation to time. A standard watch tachymeter scale is registered for converting elapsed time in seconds per unit to units per hour. Typically, the units will be miles or kilometers, but as stated above the tachymeter will work with any defined units. Before viewing some practical examples, let's look at the limitations of the typical watch tachymeter scale.

The scale on our sample watch is registered for elapsed times within the range of 12 seconds to 60 seconds, or 300 units per hour to 60 units per hour respectively. For computing event units outside of that range, some unit adjustment or mental calculation or both is required. As it happens, the range of our sample watch is good for most motor vehicle racing today, so we'll use a race car for our first practical examples.

Determining Speed, where Speed = Distance / Time
To measure the speed of a race car, start the chronograph at a starting mile marker. When the car reaches the ending mile marker, stop the chronograph, and the second hand of the watch will indicate the average speed of the car over the course of that mile. The second hand of our sample watch indicates an elapsed time of 57 seconds, so the average speed of the racing car over that mile was approximately 63 miles per hour. For another example, let's say that the second hand indicated an elapsed time of 15 seconds; then the average speed of the race car over that mile was 240 miles per hour.

Determining Distance, where Distance = Speed x Time
The tachymeter can also be used to measure out a mile, when the speed of the race car remains constant. To measure distance, start the chronometer at the starting point of the distance to be measured. When the second hand matches the known speed, the race car will mark the ending point of the distance. For example, let's say the speed of the race car is held steady at 100 miles per hour. Start the chronometer at the chosen starting point, and when the second hand indicates 100 on the tachymeter scale, the race car will have covered one mile.

Determining Production Units Per Hour
So far, our units have been miles, but we could have used kilometers or any other unit of measurement. The tachymeter doesn't care what our units might be; therefore, we can solve for units of production per hour as easily as we measure miles per hour. For example, let's say we have a widget factory, and we want to know how many widgets we can produce per hour. So, we start the chronograph at the beginning of the process for making one widget. When that widget is completed, we stop the chronograph, and on the tachymeter scale the second hand will indicate how many widgets we can produce per hour. Using our sample watch above, once more, as our example, it took 57 seconds to produce one widget. At a glance, then, we know that we can produce approximately 63 widgets per hour.

If you would like to know more about tachymeter scale use and theory, the links below provide a good starting place, offering yet more resources, depending on how deep you want to go.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tachymeter
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tachymeter_scale

The sample watch used in our tachymeter scale examples above is the Victorinox Swiss Army Chrono Classic Watch V.241120. I like the preceding Sea-Dweller for its simple elegance of design and function and, thankfully, Rolex passed that trait onto the next generation DeepSea model. The additional wording on the inner bezel ring and new bezel stick markers notwithstanding, one cannot help but note the family resemblance between the two.

Several technical advances, however, take the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller DeepSea Watch 116660-BKSO well beyond the limits of its predecessor. The DeepSea watch resists water penetration to the colossal depth of 3900 meters/12800 feet, quite an achievement for a mechanical watch (nothing wrong with having more capability than needed). Access to the watch interior is protected by the innovative RingLock System which can withstand the tremendous pressure of great depths, likewise for the Triplock screw down crown. To relieve pressure within the watch caused by helium gas buildup while in pressurized chambers, the DeepSea watch comes equipped with a Gas Escape Valve for safe decompression. In addition, for the comfort of the diver, the Sea-Dweller DeepSea model is the first watch to provide a double extension bracelet system to allow small, incremental adjustments for fitting properly over a dive suit.

Specifications

• Size:

44mm x 19mm, a men's watch

• Case:

Solid 904L stainless steel with high chromium content for maximum corrosion-resistance (eg., salt), triple RingLock System, titanium alloy caseback

• Bezel:

Mar-resistant ceramic with platinum-filled numbers, unidirectional, rotatable for checking decompression times, luminescent 'Pearl' at 12 o'clock

• Crown:

Triplock screw down crown for maximum water resistance

• Dial:

Black with large luminescent hour markers and hands, clearly readable in low light

• Crystal:

Anti-reflective, highly scratch-resistant sapphire

• Movement:

Oyster movement, automatic, Calibre 3135 with Parachrom hairspring (unaffected by magnetic fields), certified Swiss chronometer (COSC - Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified), perpetual date aperture at 3 o'clock

• Illumination:

Blue colored luminescent hands, hour markers, and bezel dot (pearl)

• Submersible:

390 atm/3900 meters/12800 feet

• Gas Valve:

Helium valve automatically releases helium trapped within the watch when in pressurized chambers (small helium atoms under pressure can penetrate any watch), equalizing pressure inside the watch during decompression

• Band:

904L stainless steel bracelet, Oyster Fliplock with Glidelock clasp, the Fliplock band can be extended by 26mm, and Glidelock enables further band extension in 1.8mm increments, allowing the watch to be fit securely over diving suits, lug width 21mm

Most of the objections I've heard about the Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea watch have to do with the writing on the inside bezel ring, "Original Gas Escape Valve" and "Ring Lock System," as though the simple elegance of the watch has been compromised. I confess that I tended to agree with those complaints at first, but the more I live with it, the more I appreciate what Rolex has done with the Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller DeepSea Watch 116660-BKSO.

By design the Sea-Dweller DeepSea watch is not jewelry, per se, but a highly refined tool for divers, built to withstand the rigors of extreme depths, while delivering vital information. The wording on the inner bezel ring makes sense to me when I remember that the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller DeepSea Watch is such a tool, and I like it all the more, even as jewelry. MSRP: $9250.00

Where to buy:
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller DeepSea Watch 116660-BKSO
Sale price: $8325.00 (Save 10% + free shipping)

Tissot T-Touch Expert Titanium Analog/Digital Watch T013.420.44.201.00

For roughing the great outdoors with style and grace, the Tissot T-Touch Expert Titanium Analog/Digital Watch T013.420.44.201.00 literally brings the environmental (ABC) data you need to your finger tips. By simply touching the sapphire crystal, the current weather conditions and trend of the past few hours will be displayed, along with forecast indication. With another touch, you can check your compass heading, or altitude in feet or meters for tracking location. Furthermore, the technical innovations don't end with tactile functioning.

The functions themselves have been technically enhanced for improved accuracy. For example, with the Tissot T-Touch Expert Titanium Analog/Digital Watch T013.420.44.201.00 you can adjust the hemisphere and climate zone for your geographic location in order to get the best results from the altimeter and barometer functions. In addition, the Tissot T-Touch Expert program takes account of atmospheric pressure variations over time, and compensates for the variations caused by altitude changes automatically, so impact on the barometric trend is minimal, and vice-versa. Of course, as with all barometric altimeters, frequent recalibration is still advisable.

So, how does the Tissot T-Touch Expert Titanium Analog/Digital Watch T013.420.44.201.00 make all of this work? At the common crown position (3 o'clock) is a pusher that toggles the touch-sensitive glass mode. Once the touch-sensitive mode is activated, indicated within the LCD index panel, you may select the function you desire by touching the respective dial location. The pushers at the 2 o'clock and 4 o'clock positions increase and decrease setting adjustments respectively. The LCD index panel in the dial indicates all settings and readings. While the function layout of the Tissot T-Touch Expert watch is well organized and intuitive, reading the manual may save some frustration. Besides, the manual is full of good, general information about ABC (altimeter, barometer, compass) functions, not just how to manipulate them on your watch, but how and why they work in relation to the environment.

Specifications

• The precision Swiss made quartz movement inside this watch probably should be the final deciding factor, but it's the lines and color scheme that first draw my eye, calling highly refined machinery to mind.

That look is achieved by accenting a white mother of pearl dial with rose gold hands, numerals and logo, and framing that dial with a smooth,18k rose gold plated bezel, all set into a black ionic plated stainless steel case, with matching bracelet. The result, at least to my eye, is strikingly handsome, worthy of Formula I, Grand Prix racing or Indy or NASCAR. And, of course, racing is what the Invicta Speedway II Chronograph Watch 4323 is about.

For that reason it comes equipped with a tachymeter scale etched on the bezel and full chronograph complications in order to convert elapsed time in seconds per units of distance (usually miles or kilometers) to rate (usually miles or kilometers per hour). To measure rate or speed, start the chronograph at the starting marker of a known distance, and at the ending marker of that distance the central seconds hand points to the speed (distance/hour) on the tachymeter scale. The working range for the tachymeter on the Invicta Speedway II Chronograph Watch 4323 is 60 units to 400 units, which is fine for most car racing today. For measuring lesser or greater speeds a little mental calculation is required.

Specifications

• Size:

43mm x 12mm, a men's watch

• Case:

Solid 316L surgical grade stainless steel with black ionic plating, screw-down caseback, triple screw down crown and pushers

• Bezel:

Fixed, 18k rose gold plated stainless steel, with tachymeter scale

• Dial:

Genuine white mother of pearl, with rose gold Arabic numerals, logo, and hands, date aperture at 4 o'clock position

• Crystal:

Anti-reflective, scratch-resistant mineral crystal with sapphire coating

• Movement:

Swiss analog quartz chronograph movement, calendar

• Chronograph:

Stopwatch, 1/5 second resolution, 60 seconds, 30 minutes, 12 hours subdials

• Illumination:

Tritnite luminescent hands and hour markers

• Submersible:

20 atm/200 meters/660 feet

• Band:

Bracelet, 316L surgical grade stainless steel with black ionic plating, fold over deployment safety clasp, 21mm width

Even if you never get to Monza, the Invicta Speedway II Chronograph Watch 4323 will conjure images of being there with its classy racing machine good looks. I often assume that people will be most impressed with all that "extra stuff," but that clearly isn't always the case.

For the person who wants an easy to read, no frills, elegantly designed field watch, the Victorinox Swiss Army Classic Infantry watch 24653 is an excellent choice. Victorinox is, perhaps, most famous for producing the authentic Swiss Army knife, and their Swiss Army timepieces reflect that same outstanding level of precision, durability, and classical design. It should be noted that only Victorinox watches are authorized by the Swiss government to bear the name "Swiss Army."

In the field, the Victorinox Swiss Army Infantry watch 24653, with its black dial, white Arabic numerals, and luminescent hands and hour markers, can be read at a glance, and that's all that many of us want from our watch, besides rugged, precision quality and good looks. Its mid-size case also wears very comfortably on any wrist, and it's slim height slips easily beneath a long sleeve.

Specifications

• As the name implies, the Ocean Angler is well-suited for salt-water angling or fishing, and its complications bear that out, particularly the lunar/tidal subdial. If you happen to be fishing a reef, you may want to take time out for some snorkeling or diving. If so, with its unidirectional dive bezel and 200 meter water resistance, the Field & Stream Ocean Angler Multifunction Watch F186GWBST will be right at home going along with you.

By the way, in case you have ever wondered why dive bezels rotate in only one direction, it's so that if the bezel position somehow gets changed accidentally after being set to time a dive, it can only change in one direction, viz., to shorten the amount of dive time remaining to prevent the diver from running out of air without warning.

Specifications

• Breitling bills the Navitimer Skyracer A2736234-G6-140A as a fine tool for professional aviators, and so it is, although today its aviation functions offer more value in the way of a luxury sports watch than practical utility. When the first Navitimer was launched in 1952, cockpit instruments were limited by today's standards. Back then the aviation slide rule fashioned into the bezel, along with the chronograph, could be counted upon to deliver the navigational computations needed for keeping a plane flying on course and on time. With the advanced instrumentation in cockpits today, few pilots will need to depend on an aviation watch to get where they are going. Yet, the Breitling Navitimer Skyracer remains desirable because it's beautiful, and that beauty is found inside as well as outside.

While a $29.99 quartz watch will probably keep time more accurately than a fine mechanical watch, even one like this Breitling Navitimer Skyracer with its ETA 2892-A2 base movement, the inexpensive quartz watch will not be as beautiful on the inside (or the outside). Does it matter what the inside looks like? Unless there's a dial aperture that exposes the inside, will I even know? Oh, you'll know, and so will others. Most people have a pretty good idea about all the whirling doodads packed inside the case of a watch like the Breitling Navitimer Skyracer. And only those who are utterly dull to human ingenuity will fail to appreciate the inner beauty, even when it cannot be seen. There's something very satisfying about wearing a watch that ticks, and no matter how much more accurate they may be, inexpensive quartz watches just don't have that something.

Specifications

• Size:

43.5mm x 16mm, a men's watch

• Case:

Solid stainless steel, 22mm lug width

• Bezel:

Bidirectional rotating pinion bezel, slide rule

• Crown:

Screw-locked

• Dial:

Silver, subtle radiating texture

• Crystal:

Highly scratch-resistant sapphire, glare proof on both sides

• Movement:

Mechanical, ETA 2892-A2, Breitling 27 caliber, 21 jewels, automatic winding with 42 hour power reserve

• Chronograph:

Two-hand totalizer, 1/4 second, 30 minutes, 12 hours

• Illumination:

Luminescent hands

• Submersible:

20 atm/200 meters/660 feet (while not a dive watch, it can be worn while diving)

• Band:

Professional II model, stainless steel bracelet, deployment clasp

• Production years:

2007-present

The Breitling Navitimer Skyracer is a world-class luxury sports watch.
