For really serious athletes (or if you just really like gadgets) you can also dovetail data from the Timex GPS 3D Sensor T5F891 (approx. $120) for adding in altitude, latitude, longitude, ascent/descent details to your reports. Both HRM watches offer great functionality, and each in its own way has great styling. I still want to review a couple more HRM watches before making up my mind, but the Timex IronMan Road Trainer Heart Rate Monitor T5K212, which is a bit less costly, is looking like a great choice. Tachymeter Scale Use

Certain sports watches (eg., racing watches) have a tachymeter scale inscribed on their bezel (see the sample watch to the left). A tachymeter can be used to measure speed or distance, or any event that can be quantified as units in relation to time. A standard watch tachymeter scale is registered for converting elapsed time in seconds per unit to units per hour. Typically, the units will be miles or kilometers, but as stated above the tachymeter will work with any defined units. Before viewing some practical examples, let's look at the limitations of the typical watch tachymeter scale.

The scale on our sample watch is registered for elapsed times within the range of 12 seconds to 60 seconds, or 300 units per hour to 60 units per hour respectively. For computing event units outside of that range, some unit adjustment or mental calculation or both is required. As it happens, the range of our sample watch is good for most motor vehicle racing today, so we'll use a race car for our first practical examples.

Determining Speed, where Speed = Distance / Time
To measure the speed of a race car, start the chronograph at a starting mile marker. When the car reaches the ending mile marker, stop the chronograph, and the second hand of the watch will indicate the average speed of the car over the course of that mile. The second hand of our sample watch indicates an elapsed time of 57 seconds, so the average speed of the racing car over that mile was approximately 63 miles per hour. For another example, let's say that the second hand indicated an elapsed time of 15 seconds; then the average speed of the race car over that mile was 240 miles per hour.

Determining Distance, where Distance = Speed x Time
The tachymeter can also be used to measure out a mile, when the speed of the race car remains constant. To measure distance, start the chronometer at the starting point of the distance to be measured. When the second hand matches the known speed, the race car will mark the ending point of the distance. For example, let's say the speed of the race car is held steady at 100 miles per hour. Start the chronometer at the chosen starting point, and when the second hand indicates 100 on the tachymeter scale, the race car will have covered one mile.

Determining Production Units Per Hour
So far, our units have been miles, but we could have used kilometers or any other unit of measurement. The tachymeter doesn't care what our units might be; therefore, we can solve for units of production per hour as easily as we measure miles per hour. For example, let's say we have a widget factory, and we want to know how many widgets we can produce per hour. So, we start the chronograph at the beginning of the process for making one widget. When that widget is completed, we stop the chronograph, and on the tachymeter scale the second hand will indicate how many widgets we can produce per hour. Using our sample watch above, once more, as our example, it took 57 seconds to produce one widget. At a glance, then, we know that we can produce approximately 63 widgets per hour.

I confess that I tended to agree with those complaints at first, but the more I live with it, the more I appreciate what Rolex has done with the Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller DeepSea Watch 116660-BKSO.

By design the Sea-Dweller DeepSea watch is not jewelry, per se, but a highly refined tool for divers, built to withstand the rigors of extreme depths, while delivering vital information. The wording on the inner bezel ring makes sense to me when I remember that the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller DeepSea Watch is such a tool, and I like it all the more, even as jewelry. When the first Navitimer was launched in 1952, cockpit instruments were limited by today's standards. Back then the aviation slide rule fashioned into the bezel, along with the chronograph, could be counted upon to deliver the navigational computations needed for keeping a plane flying on course and on time. With the advanced instrumentation in cockpits today, few pilots will need to depend on an aviation watch to get where they are going. Yet, the Breitling Navitimer Skyracer remains desirable because it's beautiful, and that beauty is found inside as well as outside.

Altimeter and Barometer Functions

The altimeter and barometer functions found in many sports watches deserve special attention, because getting reliable results from either one or both requires some basic understanding of how they operate. I've read numerous owner reviews that complain about wild inaccuracies in their watch's altitude and barometric readings, thinking that the watch is faulty. In some cases the watches may indeed have been faulty, but without understanding how the altimeter and barometer functions work, wild inaccuracies are common. Fortunately, with a little know how, accurate readings are possible even in extreme conditions.

Watch altimeter and barometer functions both depend on a built-in sensor that measures atmospheric pressure to inform the respective readouts. The altimeter function uses atmospheric pressure to determine altitude changes, while the barometer function uses atmospheric pressure to determine changing weather conditions.

As long as one or the other of those two factors (altitude or weather conditions) remains stable, it's reasonably easy to get reliable readouts from both the altimeter and the barometer. However, when altitude and weather conditions are both changing at the same time, it becomes more complex to isolate the effect that each factor is contributing to the change in atmospheric pressure that the watch sensor is detecting.

So, when using the altimeter and barometer functions, when both factors are changing at the same time (eg., hiking in the mountains when a cold front is moving in), it's essential to compensate for either the altitude or the weather conditions, or else the readouts of both altimeter and barometer will become skewed. Compensation can be made in one of two ways or both: Recalibrate the altimeter by using a known elevation point, or recalibrate the barometer according to known barometric pressure data.

Known elevation points can be determined from landmarks on a topographic map (my own preference), and barometric pressure data can be obtained from a detailed, local weather report. To maintain reliable readings, frequent recalibration is needed. If the weather conditions are stable, you will want to recalibrate at least once or twice per day, and more often is always better. When your altitude is changing and the weather is also changing, you will want to recalibrate once every 2-3 hours, or more often when possible. By recalibrating frequently, as needed, the altimeter and barometer readings will both remain quite accurate.

The Girard-Perregaux Sea Hawk used to impress me with its 3000m/9900ft water-resistance rating, as did the Rolex Sea Dweller (DEEPSEA version) which can withstand 3900m/12800ft, but for a fraction of the cost of either of those two watches, the Technomarine Abyss Dive watch is rated for water-resistance to 12000m/39400ft.

The "Abyss 10.900" on the dial corresponds to the depth of the deepest location on earth, the Mariana Trench, the abyss, which is 10900 meters deep. For its clean, straightforward display and simplicity of function, the Polar RS300X Heart Rate Monitor watch is a strong contender for becoming my next fitness watch. Also in the running are a few by Garmin, New Balance, Suunto, and Timex, as well as certain other Polar models, and while some of them will no doubt become subjects for review in the near future, the Polar RS300X is currently at the top of my list. It's really a mini-computer that provides all of the essential heart rate data needed for any level of training for walkers, runners, cyclers, rowers, etc. The RS300X Heart Rate Monitor is ideal for cardiac rehab workouts and weight loss programs as well.

For the really serious athletes among us, the Polar RS300X can even be optionally coupled with either the S1 Foot Pod or the G1 GPS Sensor to add speed, distance and elevation to the heart rate data, and all or part of that data can be transferred to a PC via USB connection through the Flowlink in order to take advantage of Polar's training software for planning and analyzing your training. Those latter options cost about $190 altogether, and you can decide whether you really need some or all of that or not. For myself, all I really need is the watch without the optional accessories, at least for starting out.

Tag Heuer confidently claims that this watch represents "nothing less than the most elegant, high-performance sports chronograph ever conceived." Without question, the Tag Heuer Aquaracer Calibre S Regatta Watch CAF7110.BA0803 is a full-blooded thoroughbred of Swiss engineering and visual artistry. Beyond its chrono functions it doesn't offer much extra (well, submersible to 300 meters), but a yachting watch doesn't need distractions, and what a chronograph! This TAG is all about its dials and the uses to which they are put.

When I first saw the face of the Aquaracer Caliber S Regatta Watch CAF7110.BA0803, I thought Tag Heuer developed a unique chrono display just to uphold their avant-garde reputation, but I've had to reconsider. If you are accustomed to reading the three subdials of traditional chronographs, as I am, this display takes some rethinking, but not all that much. The three subdial format that we're used to seeing reaches back into the 19th century, based on wholly mechanical architecture, and the 21st century Calibre S embodiment is made possible by a true hybrid of mechanical and quartz technology, which permits a much more intuitive readout.

To begin making sense of it, the Tag Heuer Aquaracer Calibre S Regatta Watch CAF7110.BA0803 has three modes, Time, Regatta, and Chronograph, which are indicated by the left semicircular subdial (see the closeup image to the right). All of the watch and chronograph functions are displayed by the three central hands (hour, minute, second), while the right semicircular subdial presents tenths of a second in the Regatta and Chronograph modes, and in the Time mode the two subdials combine to show the date. The modes are selected by depressing the crown. The following table breaks it all down.

Making all of this happen with extraordinary precision (12000 hours without losing a second), the Tag Heuer Aquaracer Calibre S Regatta Watch CAF7110.BA0803 requires amazing synchronization throughout, and that is achieved by TAG's breakthrough electro-mechanical movement, an amalgam of mechanical and quartz movement with at least 230 mechanical components and five bi-directional micro-engines capable of twice the torque of conventional timepiece engines. Tremendous effort has been expended to maximize power, reduce gear tolerance, optimize hand shape and inertia, etc. The result is an extremely sophisticated sports watch.

Having stated the caveat in the paragraph above, the Suunto Vector XBlack watch is a superb outdoor watch for the price (MSRP: $219). If you are not familiar with how most altimeter/barometer watches work, pay close attention to those instructions. Both functions depend on sensing air pressure, so the accuracy of the one depends on the other. If your altitude and the weather conditions are both changing dramatically at the same time, getting true readings can become a bit tricky. However, if you recalibrate the altimeter at known elevations from time to time, your barometric and altitude readings will both remain sound.

Once again, you may not buy the Suunto Vector watch to use all of its features. I have heard one person call it ugly, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say, and as you might expect from me by now, I find it attractive. If you do want to use some or all of its functions, that really is the best reason for buying the Suunto Vector XBlack, a well developed sports watch for the relatively low MSRP of $219.00.

If you are looking for a fine aviation/flight chronograph watch, the Citizen Skyhawk Blue Angels watch is an excellent candidate. While I do not make my living with a rifle, the 5.11 HRT watch has fascinated me since it was first introduced a few years back. It draws out the gadget lover in me, and expands my appreciation for human innovation, the way most sports and tactical watches of merit do. The SureShot ballistics calculator, supplied by Horus Vision, is its primary and unique feature. The 5.11 HRT watch was designed in consultation with military and law enforcement specialists, and in partnership with Horus Vision, maker of long range ballistics software, as a sniper's tool made to be worn on the wrist. With the ability to input up to thirteen long range shooting variables, including ballistic and environmental data, the SureShot calculator provides point of impact solutions out to 1000 meters. While made to satisfy the needs of law enforcement, viz., interdiction specialists, the 5.11 HRT watch also serves the needs of recreational long range rifle shooters.

And, as mentioned above, even for those who do not shoot, the 5.11 HRT watch can keep track of laps and lap times, or other timing applications with its digital chronograph functions and its unidirectional timing bezel, and provide local analog time and two additional digital time zones. Altimeter/barometer and temperature sensors would have been a nice added touch for entering up to the minute local environmental data in the field, but all in all the 5.11 HRT provides a lot of functionality in a tough titanium case that looks very cool for the MSRP of $290.00. Of all the watches I could have chosen for this first blog post, why did I choose the Luminox Navy Seal Dive watch? For me it was simple. It's the watch that first caught my attention and fueled my passion for sports watches, tactical and dive watches. I came across it while on vacation in the Florida Keys several years ago with my two sons. We took a snorkeling tour at John Pennecamp Coral Reef State Park, and I noticed that our guide was wearing what I thought was a good looking watch. I asked him about it, and he was more than glad to talk about his Luminox Navy Seal Dive watch. With his endorsement, I was hooked. Since then I've come to appreciate a wide range of sports watches in general, but the NS3001 was my entry point, and it has proven to be a good one.

The Luminox Navy Seal Dive watch is lightweight and, with the soft polyurethane strap, it's very comfortable to wear. The vitrified tritium illumination is the outstanding feature of this watch. It glows continuously for many years providing clear readouts in any light (given the half-life of tritium, the glow intensity gradually diminishes over the years, of course). Because no button needs to be depressed to activate the illumination, the watch is easily readable underwater, even at night, without compromising it's water-tight integrity, making it an ideal tactical dive watch.

Many of us who enjoy wearing the Luminox Navy Seal Dive watch, however, may never be found scuba diving. We wear it because we like how it looks. While it's quite durable, up to a lot of punishment, I normally wouldn't wear it while doing heavy construction work. Even at the relatively low MSRP of $275.00, this watch is a fine instrument. Given proper care and common sense usage, it will provide many years of satisfying service.

Why Blog About Sports Watches?

In an age when some people are talking about the encroaching obsolescence of wristwatches, when cell phones and other hand held devices can deliver all of the same functions and data, why should anyone bother blogging about sports watches? I suppose the question is fair enough (and yes, the question has been posed to me), but I believe it can be answered with more than enough reasons for those of us who love sports watches to continue learning about them, appreciating them, and using them. Below are three of my reasons for loving sports watches of various types. Maybe my reasons will resonate with your own, and maybe you can supply some even better ones (I'd love to hear them).

A lot of data besides time/day/date can be accessed quickly from a very handy location--strapped to your wrist, leaving your hands free for other things. I believe this utility factor alone will ward off obsolescence any time soon.
Watches are fascinating testaments to human ingenuity, inventiveness, and technology, able to satisfy even the most hungry gadget lovers among us. While the inspiration watches provide, in and of itself, may not be enough to prevent them from becoming nostalgic wonders, it doesn't hurt that they evoke exclamations like, "Wow, that is so cool!"
Finally, sports watches simply look good, in the field, under the sea, up on the mountain, in the air, in the restaurant, and in the office. And that, after all, may be one of the best reasons to buy them, wear them, and collect them, now and well into the future.
